Job Description Details:

The school social worker is a specialist who serves as a liaison between home, school and community. Activity is directed toward those children whose academic, social, or behavioral difficulties have a negative impact on their learning.

The school social worker works closely with all school personnel to broaden the school's knowledge and understanding of the child’s home environment, as well as factors affecting the child outside of school. At the same time there is appropriate action to involve parents/guardians in recognizing the nature of school related problems and to then to conjointly plan for the child’s improvement and success in school.

The school social worker has contacts with community practitioners and agencies and others interested in the child, and facilitates the making of referrals and the consequent exchange of information and recommendations.

Responsibilities:

1) Attends all IST meetings.

2) Attends CSE/CPSE meetings when indicated.

3) Collaborates with teachers and other professionals in assessing student needs and in the design of strategies to help individual students and/or groups of students.

4) Consults with teachers and other student support personnel about a student's home and outside-of-school circumstances.

5) Demonstrates knowledge about and is able to access community services.

6) When indicated, makes home visits if such an action is deemed important to gathering

information, and/or communicating information relative to increasing student success in school.

 

 

7) Responsible for one (1) or more of the following:

a. Behavior management.

b. Identifies children at risk and provides follow-up prevention and/or support.

c. Provides counseling services and resources.

d. Provides outreach from the school to families and the community.

e. All other duties and responsibilities as designated by the Building Principal (or designee) and/or Director of Special Programs.

Performs related duties as required or assigned.
